Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is a specialized form of therapy that focuses on the muscles and functions of the face, mouth, and throat. It involves the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of orofacial muscle imbalances related to swallowing patterns, speech, dentition, chewing/bolus collection, an overall mental and physical health.

Through orofacial myofunctional therapy, we work on facial and tongue exercises to promote (1) an accurate resting posture (e.g., where your jaw, teeth, tongue and lips are correctly placed); and (2) adequate chewing and swallowing through the elimination of a tongue thrust.

We work closely with ENTs, Orthodontists, Dentists, Oral Surgeons and other professionals across the United States in order to provide the individual with the best treatment plan and outcomes. Orofacial myofunctional therapy is ideal for individuals who are 4 years and older. If you’re unsure if you or your child would benefit from an orofacial myofunctional evaluation, please give us a call or schedule an initial consultation.

Reasons for a Tongue or Lip Tie Release

After
Before
  • Eating: A limited range of tongue movement can make it hard for the child to latch onto the breast or a bottle, resulting in poor weight gain and discomfort during feeding.
  • Speech: A restricted tongue can hinder the articulation of certain sounds, leading to speech impediments that can impact communication skills.
  • Mouth Breathing: Tightness in the labial frenum can restrict proper mouth closure, leading to mouth breathing, which may cause sleep and airway issues as your child grows.
